LELA’S FITNESS TIP #1

Fitness is an integral part of the martial arts. Yet, look around the average studio, how many truly “fit” people do you see? The scientific, highly verbal nature of Kenpo can have us standing around while studying a movement or discussing a principle. This doesn’t leave much time for fitness in the average class, SO …

Here’s a way to work cardiovascular conditioning into your BASICS practice. Before or after formal classes, set some space at the edge of your training area (your mat, if you’re lucky enough to HAVE one). Get in a neutral bow --- strong stance, erect posture, bent knees, and good focus.

Now move across the floor using a step drag while jabbing with your lead hand. Make six trips across the across the floor, then, switch lead hands and repeat. Now, continue with BASICS. Alter your pattern, use various kicks, step through and drag variations. Use other punches, blocks and various maneuvers. Use you imagination!

Spend ten or fifteen minutes doing this before or after each class and you’ll begin to see your physical fitness improve!
