AWARE story
As Easy As Falling Off A ...This story starts on a muggy-moist summer afternoon in New Orleans. I leave for work about 2pm, for a 3 to 11 shift, I 'm always in yellow riding my motorcycle. Today, my alert state is heightened by the fact that a rain shower just finished and the streets are slick. My 1976 Honda 360CL is a small but solid little bike, my only mode of transportation.
Just outside of the city at the intersection on my right is a white 1972 Ford Granada with blue interior. These details are forever etched in my mind, trauma will do that. Suddenly, the little old blue-haired lady at the wheel pulls out as if I were invisible! Moving into orange, I adjust to pull into the left hand land blinkers on, I check to my left and begin my lane change going about 30-40 mph. I look to the front, XO!!!!! The Ford pulls out right in front of me!?!
Breaking hard, I begin to swerve on the wet street. I experience it all in slow motion. I've come to see this "time distortion" effect under high stress as part of the superconcious or "chi" state. I'm in red. Every fiber of my being is focused on the road coming up fast. I launch forward over my left shoulder as the Honda lies down on its left side. Rolling forward, I finally come up to my feet. My bike is laying a foot or two behind me. The Granada is far down the highway. The little old lady is unaware of my athleticism or brush with death or the cause.
A rusty blue pickup stops to see if I'm ok. An older man (probably my age now) gets out and helps me pick up my bike and pull it to the side of the road. My motorcycle restarts without a hitch. I check for damage. My jacket is torn at the elbow. My arm is bleeding. I was shaken, but I survived. I still have the scar on my elbow.
My motorcycle story is just one of the exciting adventures in AWARE -- Survival Stories to help you have a safer life. The book explains, in detail, the Color Code of Awareness I used to tell my story. Aware is a unique collection of true to life applications of martial arts training. Aware offers a bold and refreshing insight into fascinating stories of survival. Aware was written and compiled by Skip Hancock and is available from:
